Maternity Nurses
The role
The role of a maternity nurse is to take care of you and your
newborn infant. With her training and wealth of experience she is
able to take total care of your baby with knowledge and confidence,
support you with breastfeeding, new mum issues and help to make the
transition into parenthood a rewarding experience for you and your
family.
She can be
expected to attend to all needs of the infant such as feeding,
bathing, changing nappies, settling etc. In addition, supporting and
advising the mother with breastfeeding, attending to her emotional
and physical well being, giving advice and support in any way within
her professional scope. It is usual for her to guide you and your
baby into a pattern of feeding and sleeping that you are happy with,
so that by the end of 4 weeks your baby should be starting to settle
into a routine that you can continue after the maternity nurse has
left, making your life easier and your baby happy and secure. She
will give you tips on how to maintain successful breastfeeding and
how to avoid the pitfalls of bad sleep habits for your baby. She is
not expected to do any household duties such as cooking and cleaning
beyond what is required for the baby
About Annerley maternity nurses
Our maternity nurses are native English speakers, usually from UK,
NZ, Australia or Canada. The majority hold maternity nurse
qualifications and all are experienced in the care of newborn
infants, some specialize in taking care of twins. All our maternity
nurses are trained in CPR and Infant first aid.
Available to work days, nights or 24hr cover, you can decide which
option would work best for you.
24 hour cover
Maternity nurses on 24 hr cover will work 6 days per week, live in
and be expected to have some time off during the day/ night to sleep
and have some free time whilst still being ‘on call’ should you
need assistance. The nurse will attend to the baby’s needs and
support the mother with breastfeeding and baby care. You will be
expected to provide a bed in the baby’s room or separate room for
the maternity nurse during the extent of her stay with you.
Night maternity nurses
They will usually work a 10 - 12 hour shift 6 days/nights per week.
The most usual night shift is 9pm – 7am. The nurse will help
settling your baby for the night, attend to the baby during the
night, bringing baby to you for breastfeeding, and generally
allowing both parents to sleep well during the night hours. You will
be required to provide a bed for your night maternity nurse, either
in the baby’s room or a separate room.
